Today’s word is hope.
I debated long and hard whether or not I should post this video today. I know there will be mixed reactions.
On the one hand there are some people, most likely individuals within the Down syndrome community, that are inwardly groaning. These people have seen this video dozens of times, and it has become old news. They may pull out phrases such as “inspiration porn”, “overdone”, or “been there, seen that” as descriptors for its content. They may criticize or critique my choice. If this is you, know that I am completely fine with our differing views, but today, this blog post is not for your benefit.
This blog post is for me.
The video gives me a deep sense of hope every time I watch it. Hope that while I tout the sentiment that Jake’s potential should not be limited by anyone’s expectations, there are individuals with Down syndrome who are every day proving that sentiment to be true. Hope that Jake can accomplish greatness, in whatever form he chooses to live that out. Hope that little by little, society is beginning to embrace a different perception of people with disabilities.
Please, if you’ve never seen this video, or even if you have, watch it again. Celebrate the potential, the possibilities, the hope!
