A Sure Way to Light Up a Child’s Face…

20 May

I can’t believe my baby boy is three!
It really is true what people tell you.  When Jake was tiny and everything was new, overwhelming, sleep-deprived and stressful, I remember distinctly the voices of those around me who were further along in the journey.  “Cherish this time,” they would say, “because before you know it, you will blink and it will be gone”.  And you know what?  It’s absolutely true.  Three years later, I look back with a degree of melancholy at how quickly the time has passed.  And while I look forward in anticipation to the excitement of what the next chapter looks like, I simultaneously desire to cling to my baby boy for just a while longer.

This past weekend, we celebrated Jake’s 3rd birthday.  And although Jake is moving into a season of temper tantrums and hissy fits the development of his personality and preferences (more on this later!), there are a few sure ways to make his face light up with joy.  Some of these would include:

Family and friends.  Cousins who dote on him, grandmas and grandpas who spoil him rotten.  Family friends who feel more like family than friends.

Ladies man already...going in for the kiss!

Ladies man already…going in for the kiss!

Elmo.  Elmo balloons.  Elmo jello.  Elmo cupcakes.  Elmo presents.  Everything and anything Elmo!  (can you tell what his long-standing obsession is?!)

Presents!  Presents that represent new experiences, opportunities for growth, development of skills, and fun!

Cake!  Sparklers that sizzle and dazzle, causing pure, unadulterated delight in the recipient!  Candles that glimmer with the promise of a new year to come.  And of course, the enthusiastic enjoyment of cake and cupcakes, resulting in the desolation of both Elmo and Cookie Monster cupcakes, and the ensuing sugar high!

He was in awe of the sparklers. And…actually blew the candle out (almost) himself…but he was blowing. And it was going out. And friends, this doesn’t seem like a big deal to some of you, but it is!

All in all, a great birthday, and a sure way to light up a child’s face!  Looking forward to what this year will bring!  Happy Birthday Jake!

xoxx, I was feeding Elijah the other night and just closing my eyes to relive the beautiful moment he was born. Indeed the time goes too fast
