We have had a few “firsts” in the last few weeks, and I wanted to share! One thing I have learned about having a baby with Down syndrome is this: the “firsts” are the same as a typically-developing baby. They may happen on a different schedule, but they still happen! And they are just as exciting for us as parents!

We were at our friends’ house for dinner, and they have a little girl who is about Jake’s age. She has an exersaucer, so we tried putting Jake in it. His little toes barely touched the ground, but he just sat and looked intently at all the toys, loving every minute of it. He even got one in his mouth!

This was the first time that Jake rolled over by himself! We have been practicing with him a bit lately, since he seemed to be into it. We would put him on his tummy, and then he would scrunch his legs up under him and try and push himself over. He is getting pretty good at turning his hips, but could never quite get all the way around. Last night though, we were at a Life Group with our church, and 10 other people were witness to Jake’s first time getting all the way over by himself! So exciting!!

Today we had our first water therapy session, and Jake LOVED it!! We are going once a week at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. They have a pool there, and they do water therapy for little ones with Down syndrome. There were only two babies in the class today, so it wasn’t too overwhelming for him. I wish I had a camera to capture it…Jake was SO CUTE! They put him in this inner-tube-type-thing called a “swimava” that is basically an inner tube that does up right under the baby’s neck, so their heads are bobbing around like a little tennis ball and their bodies are submersed under water! This allowed Jakey to use his whole body in the water, which will help him with core strength and muscle tone. I wish I could have taken a picture of my tiny little guy! Pictures to come though:)
And in other news, we are moving in a week and a half! We bought a house in Tuscany (for those of you who know Calgary) and we are super excited about the chance to have a bit more space. I know Jake is little (about 10lbs now!) but he sure takes up a lot of room!
